Glove Factory... Twisted Paper... Equal Twisted Structural Rules

Could there be another edge condition concerning our discipline?

Is there a boundary softening between the traditional structural materials and others?

I met some Art students who were blurring the lines between Architecture and Sculpture. I stopped in the Glove Factory, AKA Arts Studio for SIU. There were some students constructing a sculpture made from newspapers. It was striking. Allison, Brent and er... What-Her-Name were making little structures from these rolled up tubes of newspaper. They will be done for Wednesday, they invited me! Possibilities? Look at Shigeru Ban. This is a man who has been devoting his Architecture to simple paper as a structural element, he champions the use of tough paper tubes like the ones used for mailing drawings.

It reminded me of the fictional accounts of William Gibson, the author and the inventor of the term "Cyberpunk" often wrote about papercore bicycles, Hovels made of computer circuit boards and people living on and in the interstitial spaces like the Golden Gate Bridge. His works include "Johnny Mnemonic", and "Mona Lisa Overdrive".

The interesting thing is Allison (on the left) has a roommate in Architecture named Tiffany who is a freshman. Betsey and I were visiting a First Baptist Church in Herrin, shopping for a new church home. One of the men I met mentioned his daughter Tiffany, who just started Architecture at SIUC! The chances are good it's the same girl.

The Count is kinda funny because he's just looking at you from the door when you pull the handle to leave. Since he was in the threshold of the door, he is his own little edge.
